The Ještěd cable car is technically interesting as well as being an attractive vehicle enabling tourists a quick and comfortable journey to the top of the mountain. It was only the second cable car in Czechoslovakia. (The first was constructed in 1928 in Krkonose (the Giant Mountains) and led from Janské lázně to Černá Hora).
After the First World War, the German Mountain Club of the Ještěd and Jizera Mountains started to consider building a cable car. They needed a comfortable means of access to stock their cottage on the top. They even had technical plans drawn up in Lipsko in the 1920s. However, the construction was not realized due to land reform and the high expense. At the beginning of the 1930s, the plan was taken over by the Czechoslovakian Railway Company. In the settling of property rights during land reform the company obtained extensive plots of land on the slopes of Ještěd, including the plots right on the top. To the great disappointment of the Mountain Club the project was commissioned from František Wiesner’s engineering company in Chrudim. The construction was started in 1932 and in June 1933 the cable car was opened to the public. The whole project was a matter of prestige for the company. The original technical solution meant basically that two stations would be built, between which two cars would move suspended on cables. The cables were supported in two places by riveted posts. Its total length was 1,183m and it surpassed 400m in height. This cable car worked by the pendulum system and it was able to transport 330 people an hour. It was used without any difficulties until 1971, when the original mechanism became so worn down that it had to be taken out of action. It was decided to make a complete reconstruction in the same spot using the original concept. The project was again commissioned from the same company, now called Transporta. It is noteworthy that in the end the whole reconstruction lasted three years (1972-1975) and it took considerably longer than the building of the original cable car. The line was lengthened to 1,188m and height 402m. The original two posts were replaced by one supporting post 30m high. The new cable car is able to transport up to 525 people per hour.
