From Liberec to Jested (cycling trip)

Liberec – Nove Mesto (the crossroads by the bridge across the River Nisa in Jungmannova street, joining the cycle path) – Frantiskov – Horni Hanychov – mountain pass Na Vyprezi – Jestedka Cottage – Jested (11 km)

The first trip will naturally attract any passionate touring cyclist. A ride with a considerable height differential of 700m, it goes along rather busy roads. However, cyclists are rewarded for their hard work by a triumphant passage through the "Jested gate" – an underpass beneath the upper station of the cable car - a wonderful feeling when riding out onto the plateau in front of the mountain hotel, paved with real Jested quartzite stones.

From the town centre, near the Nisa River, ride along Jungmannova and Svermova streets, which will lead you through the whole of Frantiskov. At the crossroads with Uralska Street, one of a very few truly original and uniquely well-preserved timbered cottages is to be found. Turn left here, and go up the hill. The track leads past an old fire station with an interesting tin cross on a sandstone post on the left, and immediately on the right there is the dilapidated Baroque church of St. Jan Nepomucky. Cross the railway line (leading from Liberec to Ceska Lipa) over the bridge in Kubelikova Street, and ride up a steep hill to the crossroads with Jestedska Street, along which a tramline leads to Dolni Hanychov and Horni Hanychov. Our path follows these tracks. Keep riding up the hill; the whole path from Liberec to Jested is uphill, apart from a few exceptional stretches.

The lower stop of the cable car

Go past the last tram stop at Horni Hanychov and keep following the road, which ascends steeply past three popular pubs – Sport, Domov and Berlin. The road bends sharply twice and leads us to the water tank used for artificial snow for the Jested ski slopes. This is where we leave "civilization" and swallow more and more metres of the height differential up towards the our goal. In the spring one can often see butterbur flowers in the ditch by the road. Apart from that, the pretty forest by the road does not offer many interesting sights that would be worth getting off of the bike for. After two more sharp bend the we come to a point where you need to go left, towards the Jested ski jumps – the so-called Television Road. From this point, the road ascends gently up to Na Vyprezi pass (altitude 770 m), which is a popular refreshment point (with a little kiosk).

Next comes the steepest part of the track – first the gentle road leads through the forest, but suddenly, the hill rears up almost before our very eyes and sharply ascends up to the plain by Virive kameny (the Whirling Stones). The road here offers one of the most beautiful views of Liberec and the Jizera Mountains, which attracts many people to this spot, even at night. The road suddenly slopes even more. This is where many tourists start breathing heavily. Soon, however, we ride under the cables of the cablecar and on the right we can look right in the face of the highly-placed Jested. A few more bends and we come to the carpark by Jestedka Cottage.

Despite the next part of the path being considerably steep, the proximity of our goal brings new strength to our muscles. It is surprising how quickly it is possible to get from Jestedka to the big rocks on the southern slopes under the peak, while observing the beautiful distant views of Podjestedi. The goal is really within reach; we ride through the "gate of champions" in the building of the cable car station and ride up a few more metres to the top of Jested, feeling like subjugators of the mountain.
